The Navy Lark, one of radio's longest running laughter-makers, kept the nation on the crest of a comic wave from 1959 to 1977. All at sea in the Senior Service were conniving Petty Officer Jon Pertwee, silly-ass Sub-Lieutenant Leslie Phillips and the constantly bemused Dennis Price as 'Number One'. Below decks Ronnie Barker was just about working his passage as (Un)Able Seaman 'Fatso' Johnson. This handsome Collector's CD Edition is the second in a series which will eventually cover every existing episode of The Navy Lark, restored and remastered. Series 2, Volume 2 contains the remaining 12 episodes from the second series. The box also contains an illustrated booklet with detailed programme notes, cast biographies and details of the missing episodes, and each CD is presented in its own wallet.

THE BOUNTY is a well-made adventure based on the disastrous voyage of the HMS Bounty, starring Mel Gibson as the rebellious crew leader Fletcher Christian and Anthony Hopkins as the stern Captain Bligh. Although the story was filmed twice before, this revisionist version of the mutinous tale offers new insight into the characters, particularly through its depiction and exoneration of Bligh. In this film, he is seen as a professional seaman who maintains an appropriate level of discipline, rather than an outrageous tyrant. Under Bligh's autocratic rule, the Bounty begins an ill-timed voyage around Cape Horn. The crew approach a breaking point, and Christian leads them in revolt. But Christian fails to grasp the dire consequences that await them all. It's 1943, World War II is well under way, and Ensign Peter Maxwell is enjoying easy days in San Diego as base choir director and warm nights with his new bride, Kay. But there's a war out there waiting to be fought, and Pete wants to be part of it. When a request comes up for officers on an ammo ship (prophetically named after Pete's Iowa hometown, Liberty Hill), newly promoted Lieutenant Maxwell and the rest of his vocal quartet, the Fantail Four, volunteer. The duty they pull is dangerous even for wartime: the young officers find themselves in charge of a ship of largely untrained African American sailors who hail from big-city ghettoes, Dixie farms, and all ports in between. As the racially tense Liberty Hill Victory pulls into San Francisco's Port Chicago, the crew witnesses a horrific explosion that paints the sky red. In the wake of a mutiny by the port's surviving black sailors, protesting unsafe conditions, the Liberty Hill must step in to load ammo. This difficult task is made nearly impossible for the Fantail Four by a racist captain who would love to see the "colored" crew and his "college boy" officers fail. But when Lieutenant Maxwell finds an ally in seaman "Sarge" Washington, a former cop from the Black Belt of Chicago, the deadly job gets done, if not without incident.
