Gamblin Artist's Oils are based on alkali refined linseed oil as a binder. It yellows significantly less than cold pressed linseed oil, the traditional binder in oil paints, and makes a strong, flexible paint film. Robert Gamblin has sought out the finest grades of pigment available (yes, there are differences). He has constructed a paint of exceptional durability in a color palette that is proof of his devotion to painter's real concerns. All colors are mixed and packed by a dedicated crew of 20 employees in their sun-drenched (at least when we visited) factory in Southeast Portland. Robert's concern with the longevity of oil paint has led him to national recognition and extensive collaboration with groups such as the National Gallery in Washington, DC. Recently, Gamblin was commissioned to formulate a custom gold finish that was applied to the entire ceiling of the newly rehabilitated Radio City Music Hall in New York City. ITC Malstock is the work of Czech designer Frantisek Storm. The idea is based on a sign painting technique that uses a flat brush and a Maalstok, a long bar with soft padding which is used as a rest for the painter's hand and a guide for vertical lines. The strokes of this font end with a split stem which recalls the traces of the writer's brush. ITC Malstock is a narrow typeface which is ideal for headlines, invitations and advertisements. The designer recommends combining his typeface with others, to create harmony with sans serif typefaces in text sizes or contrast with serif typefaces.

ITC Malstock is the work of Frantisek Storm, a designer in the Czech Republic. The typeface is based on a sign painting technique that uses a flat brush and an instrument called a Maalstok (a long wooden or aluminum bar with soft padding on the top) that is used as a rest for the painter’s hand and works like a straight edge for vertical lines. The split stem endings of ITC Malstock recall the traces of the sign writer’s broad-edged brush drawn along the Maalstok. A very narrow typeface (the x-height is exactly one half of the cap-height) it is well suited to headlines, invitations, and advertisements. Storm recommends combining ITC Malstock with other faces and suggests two approaches: create “harmony” using any sans serif in text sizes, or create “contrast” using a classic serif type to achieve tension between the headline and body text. For the latter he also suggests setting the headline at twice the size of the text.
