Benefits: Motor Assembly The motor assembly includes a bumped back plate and extended pole to provide maximum excursion and minimal bottoming Spider The Orion Cobalt 12" Subwoofer uses Conex for the spider material. This material significantly prolongs the life of the subwoofer and maintains its performance. Many other materials deteriorate and begin to "dish" which cause the voice coil to no longer be centered in the magnetic gap and negatively affects the performance of the driver and ultimately results in a voice coil failure. Tinsel End Tinsel leads are the number one failure mode of subwoofers. There are various ways to attach the tinsel leads, the first is just to arc them from the terminal to the cone, the leads have the potential to either break or short together. Another is to weave them into the spider, this method prevents them from shorting together, but causes the leads to stretch as the spider moves, resulting in breakage. The Orion Cobalt 12" Subwoofer features a loop-stitch method that loops the lead over the rolls in the spider and then secures the lead in the valleys of spider with a stitch. This keeps the leads free of tension, but secure during peak performance. X-Venting To relieve as much heat as possible, the Orion Cobalt 12" Subwoofer features X-venting on the voice coil former and the neck of the cone underneath the dust cap. Both of these vent areas aid in removing heat from the motor assembly of the driver. This improves both the peak power handling and extends the overall life of the driver.
