Winding curves and smashing dead ends make SUMMER PLACE a truly ironic tale of unrequited love and teenage lust. When a business man, Ken Jorgenson (Richard Egan) takes his wife, Helen (Constance Ford) and his daughter Molly (Sandra Dee) to an island off the coast of Maine, little does he suspect that he will rekindle the teenage love affair he once had with the now married Sylvia (Dorothy McGuire). Now it seems that events are going to repeat themselves when her son (Troy Donahue) and his daughter meet and fall in love. Subtle at first, SUMMER PLACE unfolds like a easy love story, but the surprise ending makes it difficult to forget. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

They are a strange combination. The old judge, whose concessions to the modern world are a beat-up red pickup, a small sailboat, and possibly a flush toilet. He has no phone, no radio, no TV or computer. August Jorgenson's home these days is a decommissioned lighthouse in the Jersey marshes, his only companion his old black Lab. He throws away without opening any mail he receives on his rare trips to the nearby village. In contrast, there's the sophisticated trio from the world that the judge abandoned years ago, after the death of his wife. They're TV honchos from the city, full of an exciting plan to present to the old judge - a plan to arm him with the weapon to strike a mortal blow against capital punishment. Judge Jorgenson is the key, the ideal figure to make it work, and so he must be lured back into the "real world." The young man condemned to death is African-American, from a poor family, and, according to the judge's visitors, mentally or emotionally lost somehow in his own head. Jorgensen hardens himself to say no to the television executives. He does his best to resist opening the envelope they left, which, he thinks, contains the nuts and bolts of the case. But he finally does, and what he finds there changes his mind. He agrees to take the case, to try to overturn the death penalty decision and save Boyd Davis's life.
