The most important biographical record of the Reagan years"from the Reagan governorship to the 40th president's period in the White House"has not been written, until now: it is the story of Ronald Reagan's indispensable man, confidant, and single most important adviser: William P. Clark, known to many as simply The Judge. The reason Reagan had such trust in Clark was because Clark was a devout, orthodox, staunch Catholic who always put his faith first in life. It was Clark who turned Reagan around on the abortion issue. Clark's strong Catholicism is the rock of his whole life, and Reagan recognized and deeply respected that. With his record, resume, and the respect he earned from so many quarters, why did Bill Clark never pen an autobiography? Why did he never write memoirs, even while less influential advisers advanced their stories in the 1980s, proclaiming theirs to be the authoritative ???insider's account??? of the Reagan presidency? And why did Clark not write that story as everyone"from top Reagan officials such as Cap Weinberger to authoritative Reagan biographers such as Lou Cannon"urged him to do so? 'Bill Clark's reluctance to promote himself stopped him from picking up pen and paper. Instead, at long last, he acquiesced to the writing of this biography. Paul Kengor did the convincing, and Pat Clark Doerner worked with Clark to painstakingly review the manuscript"after Kengor and Doerner together wrote this fascinating account of one man's life, from a ranch house to the White House and then, again, back to the ranch"to what Ronald Reagan called the ???sunset of life.??? 'Reagan biographers such as Edmund Morris and major publications like the New York Times Magazine and Time all agree: Bill Clark was Ronald Reagan's single most trusted aide, perhaps the most powerful national security advisor in American history. His close relationship with Reagan allows special insight into the President as well as other close friends from the earliest Reagan years: Lyn Nofziger, Cap Weinberger and Bill Casey. Also featured are the exquisite Clare Boothe Luce; the elegant Nancy Reagan; the mercurial Alexander Haig; Britain's "Iron Lady, " Margaret Thatcher; France's wily Fran??ois Mitterrand, the saintly Pope John Paul II, and an anxious Saddam Hussein, among others. With Reagan, Clark accomplished many things, but none more profound than the track they laid to undermine Soviet communism, to win the Cold War. As this book shows, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clark, two ranchers, a president and his top hand, truly changed history. At long last, over two decades after that significant accomplishment, Bill Clark shares the details of that extraordinary effort, many of which"as readers of this book will learn"have never been reported. Face to Face was a landmark BBC Television series broadcast between 1959-1962, in which John Freeman, former politician and former editor of The New Statesman, asked straight forward and often searching questions to intellectually heavyweight personalities of the day. To mark the 50th Anniversary of this groundbreaking series, all 35 episodes are released on DVD for the first time from 17th August. The popular and at times controversial series pioneered a new style of interviewing. Presented by John Freeman, the camera angles were distinctive, with Freeman out of shot so only his questions could be heard. His guests were filmed in tight close-ups under stark lighting condition, almost as if under interrogation. The insightful and often probing style of the show made it stand out from anything at the time, and since. The calibre of guests was outstanding from the likes of Dr Martin Luther King to Adam Faith. King Hussein of Jordan also made an appearance, Carl Jung the esteemed psycho analyst was interviewed, as was writer Evelyn Waugh plus great actors like Albert Finney and Tony Hancock and a host of others.

This harrowing documentary chronicles the Frankfurt trial of 22 SS soldiers who served at the notorious Polish concentration camp, Auschwitz. Of course there's no way to convey the actual horrors endured by the survivors of the camp, where millions of Jews were killed and abused, and though the trial was not filmed, hundreds of hours of audio tapes from the hearing have allowed documentarians Rolf Bickel and Dietrich Wagner to provide the film with an intense soundtrack of survivor's testimony. Anguished voices recount the daily horrors they endured, with refugees coming from all over the world to testify against their former oppressors. The tapes are underscored with footage from SS archives and the Russian liberation of the camp as well as the courtroom and modern-day Europe. Originally aired on German television in 1993 in three parts-"The Investigation, " "The Trial, " and "The Verdict"-it plays to devastating effect as a three-hour omnibus. The film, which was released to American theaters in a limited run shortly after the execution of Saddam Hussein, is a chilling testament to the quickness with which even the most horrific crimes can become buried by time and change, only to be uncovered as raw and festering as ever.

Two weeks before September 11, 2001, Saddam Hussein placed his troops on their highest military alert since the Gulf War. As al-Qaeda terrorists set their attacks on America in motion, the Iraqi dictator was prepared to go to war for a second time with the United States. How did an illegitimate child from Tikrit become the West's greatest adversary, and one of the most dangerous and murderous dictators of modem times? Saddam: King of Terror is the most insightful and illuminating portrait of the Iraqi president to date - and a fascinating study of the making of a tyrant. Con Coughlin, executive editor of London's award-winning Sunday Telegraph, has covered the Middle East for decades. He has cultivated exclusive contacts among the Western intelligence community and numerous defectors from Saddam's inner circles - including former generals, political associates, and bodyguards as well as childhood friends. Coughlin also provides the first complete portrait of Saddam's childhood ever published, compiled from the author's interviews with Saddam's contemporaries and relatives who have never before spoken publicly about him.
